The REAL Reason Narcissists Always Come Back (Even When They Don’t Want You)
The REAL Reason Narcissists Always Come Back (Even When They Don’t Want You)
You’ve blocked them, survived them, maybe even half-healed from them… and then suddenly – boom – there they are again, slithering into your messages like nothing happened.
“Hey stranger.” “I miss you.” “I’ve been thinking about us.” “I’m a different person now.”
And you’re sat there like:
“If I was so difficult / crazy / ungrateful / toxic… why do you keep coming back?”
Let me save you years of confusion:
Narcissists don’t come back because they love you. They come back because they love access to you.
And there is a BIG difference.
They Don’t Miss YOU. They Miss the Supply.
At their core, narcissists want one thing above all else:
Supply.
Emotional supply. Attention. Validation. Reassurance. Praise. Sex. Drama. Reaction.
YOU are a walking buffet of supply: empathy, loyalty, softness, understanding, second chances, deep feelings, emotional generosity.
They don’t lie awake missing your soul. They lie awake wondering:
- “Do I still have access to that?”
- “Can I still get them to respond?”
- “Can I still make them feel something?”
You’re not a person to them. You’re a battery pack.
They Come Back When Their Other Supply Runs Low
Ever noticed how narcissists magically reappear right when you’re finally moving on?
That’s not the universe. That’s logistics.
They usually come back when:
- their new supply is getting fed up,
- their life feels boring,
- their ego took a hit,
- someone else rejected them,
- they’re nostalgic for the control they had over you.
They don’t think:
“Wow, I really mishandled a beautiful soul. I’m ready to change.”
They think:
“Let me see if that door is still open.”
They Come Back to Check If You’re Still on the Hook
Narcissists are obsessed with one question:
“Do I still have power over you?”
That random “I miss you” message? That weird like on your Instagram story? That sudden “hey stranger” after months of silence?
That’s not love. That’s a power audit.
If you respond, they know:
- they still live in your head,
- they can still trigger you,
- they can still access you when they’re bored.
For them, that’s the win.
They don’t need to come back fully. They just need to know they could.
They Don’t Want You – They Don’t Want You to Move On
Here’s the evil genius part:
Narcissists can move on to new partners, new lives, new victims… and still not want YOU to move on.
They will:
- breadcrumb you,
- keep you “on the shelf”,
- drop in randomly,
- say just enough to keep hope alive,
- disappear as soon as you show real emotion or boundaries.
They don’t necessarily want a relationship with you.
They want options.
They want to know that, at any time, they can pick up their phone, send three words and have you spinning again.
They Come Back to Rewrite the Story (In Their Favour)
Narcissists HATE losing control of the narrative.
If you left them, blocked them, called them out, or finally saw through their bullshit – that bruised their ego.
So they may come back to:
- re-frame what happened (“It wasn’t that bad”, “We were both toxic”),
- downplay their abuse,
- make you doubt your memory,
- get you to accept part of the blame,
- turn the breakup into a “mutual thing” instead of an escape plan.
They can’t stand the idea that somewhere out there, someone sees them clearly.
So they come back to rearrange your perception.
They Come Back When You Glow Up
Ever notice how as soon as you start:
- healing,
- looking hotter,
- regaining your energy,
- getting your money up,
- posting selfies with actual life in your eyes again…
…they magically “hope you’re doing okay”? 🥴
That’s not support.
That’s possession.
They see you thriving and suddenly remember:
“Oh yeah, that shiny thing used to belong to me.”
They don’t want to improve themselves. They just don’t want you to realise how good life is without them.
They Come Back Because You Were Easy to Manipulate (Until You Weren’t)
Let’s be blunt and empowering at the same time:
You were a narcissist’s dream:
- empathetic,
- forgiving,
- understanding,
- willing to see the best in them,
- happy to over-give to keep the peace.
They come back hoping you still are.
But once you see the pattern, once you name the behaviour, once you call it narcissistic abuse… you become dangerous to them.
You’re no longer easy supply. You’re a walking threat to their illusion.
And THAT’S when you get to flip the script.
So What Do You Do When the Narcissist Comes Crawling Back?
Short answer: Nothing.
Long answer: here you go…
1. Don’t Take the Bait
“Hey stranger.” “Thought about you today.” “I’ll always care about you.”
These are not heartfelt confessions. They’re fishing lines.
Read them, roll your eyes, delete, block, move on.
2. Do Not Try to “Win” This
You might feel tempted to meet up just to:
- show them how well you’re doing,
- finally say your piece,
- prove how over them you are,
- get one last ego boost.
Don’t do it.
You don’t win against a narcissist by engaging. You win by becoming totally unavailable to their games.
3. Remember Who They Actually Are, Not Who You Wanted Them to Be
Your brain will try to romanticise the beginning. Remind it of the middle and the end.
Write a list if you have to:
- the lies,
- the cheating,
- the gaslighting,
- the silent treatments,
- the nights you cried,
- the anxiety,
- the way you felt small around them.
That’s who’s texting you. Not the fantasy character. The emotional arsonist.
4. Fortify Your Self-Respect and Your Money
The more self-respect you have, the less appealing their nonsense is.
Same with money – the more financially stable you are, the harder it is for them to dangle crumbs of “support” or fake stability over you.
If you’re rebuilding both sanity and finances, my books Sober Not Sorry and How to Build Wealth on a Low Income are basically “I will NEVER be controlled again” manuals.
5. Go No Contact Like It’s a Spiritual Practice
No contact isn’t a punishment. It’s a nervous system reset.
Every day you don’t respond is another day your brain learns:
“I can survive without them. I can thrive without them. I am SO much better without them.”
The Holy Shit Moment
One day, the narcissist will try to come back again.
They always do.
But this time something wild will happen:
- your heart won’t race,
- your stomach won’t drop,
- your fingers won’t itch to reply.
You’ll look at their message, feel… nothing much, and think:
“Oh. I’m done.”
That’s the real miracle. Not them changing. Not them apologising.
YOU changing. YOU healing. YOU closing the door.
Narcissists come back for many reasons. Ego. Supply. Control. Curiosity. Power.
But they should never, ever find the same version of you waiting.
They were the villain in your story. You are the plot twist.
