It Was Never the Addiction — It Was the People Around Me
By Vikki
I want to tell you something that took me far too long to understand — something I wish someone had whispered into my ear years ago when I was drowning in chaos, and self-blame.
Your addiction isn’t the real problem.
The people and situations around you are.
I know that might sound wild at first and we’re not here to play the blame game. But stay with me.
When you’re surrounded by bad situations — toxic people, unhealthy environments, chaos, stress, shouting, manipulation, pain — you naturally fall into bad habits. You reach for whatever numbs the noise. You grab alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, or anything that shuts off the emotional damage for a moment.
You think you’re broken.
You think you’re weak.
But you’re not.
You were just surviving in the environment you were placed in.
Here’s the truth nobody tells you:
When you’re around good people and healthy situations, your behaviour automatically rises to match that environment.
You don’t reach for the things that ruin you — because you don’t need them.
You behave differently in front of good people.
You do better things.
You make healthier choices.
You feel safe enough to grow.
So why, when you’re around bad people, do you do bad things?
Because your environment pulls you down before you even notice.
This is not weakness.
This is psychology.
This is human nature.
Flip the Psychology — Do Good No Matter What
Here’s the mindset shift that changed my entire life:
Do good things even when you’re in bad situations.
Make the healthy choice even when the unhealthy one is right there.
Act like the person you want to be even when you feel like the opposite.
This is how I broke the cycle.
It wasn’t about “trying harder” or using more willpower.
It was about realising that I needed to remove myself from:
- the wrong people
- the wrong environments
- the wrong energy
- the wrong expectations
- the wrong influence
Because no amount of willpower can save you in a poisonous environment.
The Only Way Out Is This:
Get out of the bad situations.
Get away from the bad people.
And you will get out of the bad habits.
It’s that simple.
And yes — that hard.
But you can do it. I’m living proof.
When I changed my environment, everything else changed:
- The cravings faded.
- My mind felt clearer.
- My self-worth returned.
- My life stopped being about survival and started being about peace.
You deserve the same peace.
If you’re reading this and you’re struggling…
Please hear me:
You’re not addicted because you’re weak.
You’re addicted because you’ve been surviving in the wrong environment.
Change your surroundings and you will change your life.
I know it’s hard.
I know it feels impossible.
But stepping out of toxic environments is the single most powerful decision you will ever make.
I did it.
You can too.
And you’re not alone.
Love,
Vikki
