What You Do After The Gap Matters More Than The Gap

Missed a couple of days? Good. Here's what actually happens next.
Right, honest moment. I missed a couple of days. No dramatic excuse, life just got in the way, the way it does. And normally that's the exact spot where people quietly give up on the whole thing. So today I want to actually explain why that reaction is the real problem, not the gap itself.
The gap barely matters. What you decide it means about you is what matters.
THE RESEARCH, PART ONE

One slip isn't the same as giving up

Addiction researchers Marlatt and Gordon studied what actually separates a one-off lapse from a full relapse, and it came down to how the person reacted afterwards. The people who treated one slip as proof they'd "ruined it" were far more likely to spiral. The people who treated it as just one event, nothing more, were far more likely to carry straight on.

THE RESEARCH, PART TWO

A missed day barely moves the needle

A UCL study that tracked people building new daily habits over 12 weeks found something properly reassuring: missing a single day had no meaningful effect on how the habit formed, whether that miss happened early on or well into it. The habit kept building regardless.

THE ACTUAL POINT

Today's the bit that counts

Not the days I missed. Not some story about willpower or falling off. Just today, and what I do with it. That's genuinely the whole mechanism, according to the research and according to me.

So that's it. No guilt, no big comeback speech, just picking back up exactly where I left off. That's the whole move.
