Day 25: Small Moves, Bigger Purpose

Day 25 of 120: Small Moves, Bigger Purpose — The Christmas Body Countdown 25 of 120 120 Days to Christmas Small Moves, Bigger Purpose What actually keeps you strong as you age, and what turns your hardest chapter into your reason why. Today's a bit of a different one, part practical, part personal. Because the two things that actually shape how you age, and how you hold up when life throws something brutal at you, aren't separate. They're the same muscle, just worked in different ways. Strength isn't just something you build in the gym. It's something you build every time life tests you and you choose to keep going anyway. MOVE OFTEN, NOT JUST HARD Little bursts count more than you think You don't need an hour long session to move the needle. Short, intense bursts scattered through your day, a flight of stairs taken quickly, a minute of squats, genuinely lower your risk of an early death...

Real Coping Mechanisms For Narcissistic Parent Triggers (Not The Breathing Exercise Kind)

Real Coping Mechanisms For Narcissistic Parent Triggers (Not The Breathing Exercise Kind)

Your body reacted first. So your body needs to be the one that stands down.

You know the moment. A comment, a tone, a look, and suddenly you're eleven years old again, braced, small, apologising for something you didn't do. Most advice tells you to breathe through it, name your feelings, count to ten. Fine as far as it goes, but it treats the trigger like a thinking problem when it's actually a body problem, your nervous system doing exactly what it was trained to do for eighteen years. So the coping mechanisms that actually work are the ones that talk to your body directly, not the ones that ask it to sit still and think nicer thoughts.

What Are Real Coping Mechanisms For Narcissistic Parent Triggers?

The ones that work fastest are physical, not mental: moving your body hard enough to burn off the adrenaline the trigger just dumped into your system. A short, sharp walk, press-ups against a wall, shaking your hands and arms out deliberately. Your body reacted with a threat response, so it needs a physical signal that the threat is over, not a mental note that you're "fine now." Thinking your way calm rarely works when your body is still braced.

Why Don't Breathing Exercises Work On Narcissistic Parent Triggers?

They work a bit, but they're often too gentle for what's actually happening in your body. A trigger from a narcissistic parent isn't mild stress, it's a full threat response built from years of genuine unpredictability. Four slow breaths barely touches that. Bigger, more physical movement, actually raising your heart rate and then letting it come back down, mimics the natural end of a real threat response far more convincingly than sitting still ever will.

How Do You Stop Feeling Small Around A Narcissistic Parent In The Moment?

Change your body before you change your mind. Stand up if you're sitting. Uncross your arms. Plant your feet and put your shoulders back, even if you don't feel it yet, because posture sends a signal to your own nervous system before your thoughts catch up. It won't erase the discomfort instantly, but it interrupts the automatic shrinking your body's been trained to do, and that interruption is where you get your footing back.

What Should I Do Straight After A Triggering Conversation With A Narcissistic Parent?

Get moving as soon as you physically can, even five minutes. Walk fast, do a quick set of press-ups or squats, put on music and shake it out properly. This isn't about distraction, it's about completing the stress response your body already started so it doesn't sit in your system for the rest of the day. The version of you who trains this daily recovers from these moments in minutes. The version who doesn't can carry it for hours, sometimes days.

Why Does Building Strength Make These Triggers Weaker Over Time?

Because a body that's used to handling physical stress, heavy lifting, hard training, pushing through discomfort on purpose, simply has a wider window for stress in general. You've practised staying steady under load, so your nervous system has evidence it can cope, and that evidence shows up automatically the next time a comment lands. This is the same thinking behind rebuilding your confidence in secret, it's not one big fix, it's daily proof stacking up until the trigger just doesn't hit as hard.

You don't owe anyone a calm, composed reaction to being triggered by their own manipulation. But if you want to stop it running your day, work with your body first. It reacted first, so it gets to stand down first too.

A quick note: If these triggers are intense, frequent, or tipping into panic, that's worth proper support alongside anything here. Be strong, and be honest with yourself about what kind of help actually gets you there.

Love, Vikki
