The Caregiver’s Burnout Checklist
(AKA:
Am I Actually Fine or Just Highly Functional?
)
This is a fun-but-uncomfortably-accurate checklist for caregivers, over-functioners, single parents, emotional anchors, and “the capable one”.
No diagnoses.
No shame.
Just awareness (and maybe a laugh you desperately need).
Grab a pen. Or don’t. You already know.
✅ Daily Life Edition
Tick all that apply:
☐ You’re tired even after sleeping
☐ You fantasise about being sick enough to be left alone
☐ Silence feels suspicious
☐ You can’t remember the last time no one needed you
☐ You feel irritated by small things — then guilty for it
☐ You finish everyone else’s sentences and tasks
☐ You’re calm in emergencies and exhausted in peace
✅ Emotional Load Edition
☐ You’re the “strong one”
☐ People tell you everything
☐ You know everyone’s problems but no one knows yours
☐ You feel responsible for other people’s feelings
☐ You give advice you don’t follow because there’s “no time”
☐ You’re great at empathy and terrible at asking for help
Bonus point if people say:
☐ “I don’t know how you do it”
✅ Physical Signs (Your Body Is Subtle Until It Isn’t)
☐ Frequent illness or colds
☐ Tension you don’t notice until it hurts
☐ Headaches / jaw clenching / tight chest
☐ Random aches with no clear reason
☐ Exhaustion that coffee laughs at
☐ Your body shuts down the second you stop
✅ Boundary Dysfunction Edition
☐ You say “yes” before you think
☐ You explain your boundaries like a lawyer
☐ You feel bad saying no even when you shouldn’t
☐ You do things “just to keep the peace”
☐ You step in because it’s “easier”
☐ You secretly resent the people you help
✅ The Darkly Funny One
☐ You dream about disappearing (not dying — just unavailable)
☐ You envy people with fewer responsibilities
☐ You feel weirdly calm during chaos
☐ You cry at adverts / reels / random songs
☐ You’re productive but joy-light
☐ You’ve thought: “I just need everything to stop for a bit”
Scoring (Important)
- 0–5 ticks → You’re probably okay (check again in a month)
- 6–15 ticks → Early burnout — adjust now
- 16–25 ticks → Full caregiver burnout territory
- 25+ ticks → Please stop carrying the world immediately
The rule you need to hear
Burnout doesn’t mean you’re weak.
It means:
You’ve been strong for too long without relief.
The fun (but serious) prescription
You don’t need:
❌ another coping strategy
❌ better time management
❌ more resilience
You need:
✅ fewer people relying on you
✅ less emotional labour
✅ permission to stop compensating
✅ rest that isn’t earned
Final line (stick this on your fridge)
Being capable does not mean being responsible for everyone.
If this checklist hit a little too hard — good.
Awareness is where relief starts.
