I Don’t Want to Be Poor: How to Build Wealth Even If You’re Starting With Nothing
I don’t want to be poor. I don’t want you to be poor.
I Don’t Want to Be Poor: How to Build Wealth Even If You’re Starting With Nothing
Let’s just say it straight so there’s no confusion:
I don’t want to be poor.
And I genuinely, deeply, from-the-bottom-of-my-slightly-sarcastic-heart, don’t want you to be poor either.
This is a love letter to anyone who’s tired of being skint, tired of stressing over every bill, and tired of pretending they “don’t care about money” when actually… money worries keep them awake at 3am.
There is nothing spiritually enlightened about constantly panicking over the gas bill. There is nothing “chilled” about your card getting declined when you’re just trying to buy bread and milk. And there is absolutely nothing cute about staying broke just because the world made you feel guilty for wanting more.
So this post is for you if:
- You’re starting from basically nothing – overdraft, debt, low income, chaos.
- You’re a single parent trying to keep everyone alive, clothed and semi-sane.
- You’ve survived toxic people, narcissists, or just life generally kicking you in the shins.
- You’re finally at the point of saying, “You know what? I don’t want this anymore. I’m done being broke.”
Good. That “I am DONE” energy? That’s where wealth building starts.
If you want the full step-by-step, no-BS system I used to build wealth on a low income, it’s all inside my book:
How to Build Wealth on a Low Income
👉 Grab the book hereLet’s start here
It’s Not Shallow to Want Money – It’s Survival
A lot of us grew up being told things like:
- “Money doesn’t buy happiness.”
- “Rich people are greedy.”
- “Be grateful you have anything at all.”
And sure, happiness isn’t sold on Amazon Prime (yet). But let’s not lie: money absolutely buys breathing space, options, safety, food, heating, and a life that doesn’t revolve around panic.
“You’re not ‘obsessed with money’. You’re just tired of watching your life get smaller every time a bill lands.”
Wanting wealth doesn’t make you bad, greedy, or selfish. It makes you responsible. Especially if you’ve got kids watching how you handle life.
So the first step to building wealth from nothing is simple:
Give yourself permission to want more.
From zero (or less)
Yes, You Can Build Wealth From Nothing – Really
A lot of “build wealth” advice is clearly written for people who already have plenty.
“Just invest £1,000 a month!”
Okay, Susan. Some of us are still trying to figure out how to afford cheese.
But here’s the good news: most people who build wealth are not born into it. They start with normal or low incomes, messy pasts, and about £3.27 in their savings account. Wealth comes from what you do consistently, not how glamorous your starting point is. [oai_citation:0‡FinanceBuzz](https://financebuzz.com/build-wealth-from-scratch?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
So if you’re starting with:
- Debt
- A low income
- No family safety net
- A brain full of anxiety
…you’re in the right place. This guide is exactly for you.
Step one
Stop the Financial Bleeding (Without Killing All Your Joy)
When you’re starting from nothing, rule number one is:
Stop letting money leak out of your life like a badly-plumbed sink.
That doesn’t mean no fun, no takeaways ever again, no coffee, no life. I’m not here to turn you into a miserable spreadsheet robot. I’m here to help you cut the crap that’s costing you your future.
Do a ruthless but loving money sweep
Grab a notebook, a brew, and your bank statements. Yes, it’s grim. Yes, we’re doing it anyway.
- Cancel subscriptions you forgot existed.
- Downgrade things you don’t use properly.
- Be honest about the “little bits” that add up – snacks, apps, late fees.
Quick win: most people on low incomes can still find £20–£50 a month they didn’t realise was slipping away. That “tiny” money becomes the foundation of your future wealth.
You are not a failure for needing to do this. You are a badass for being willing to look.
Step two
Build Your “I Refuse to Be This Broke Again” Fund
Before we get fancy with investing, we need something deeply unsexy but life-changing:
A small emergency fund.
I’m not talking about £10,000 overnight. I’m talking about your first £100… then £250… then £500… slowly, stubbornly, lovingly built. Even on low incomes, slowly building a buffer is one of the biggest game-changers for financial stability. [oai_citation:1‡Cult Of Money](https://www.cultofmoney.com/10-low-income-money-tips/?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
This is your:
- “The washing machine broke but I’m not spiralling.”
- “The car died but I’m not reaching for a payday loan.”
- “The narcissist/ex/circumstances tried to throw me off, but I’ve got a safety net now.”
Even £5 a week matters. You’re not just saving money – you’re rebuilding your self-respect.
Important: If you’ve come out of abuse, debt, or years of chaos, that first £100 with your name on it is emotional. You are allowed to be proud of it. Frame the screenshot if you want. This is you choosing yourself.
Step three
Debt: We’re Not Shaming You, We’re Just Not Staying Here
If you’re in debt, you’re not broken. You’re not stupid. You’re not “bad with money”. You’re human. You’ve survived some stuff. And the system is absolutely not designed in your favour.
But we still need a plan.
Face the numbers – with snacks
Make a list of:
- Every debt you have
- The balance
- The interest rate
- The minimum payment
Then choose a strategy:
- Snowball: pay off the smallest first for quick wins.
- Avalanche: pay off the highest interest first to save the most money.
Whichever you pick, the real magic is this:
You stop pretending it doesn’t exist, and you start telling your money where to go.
Step four
Growing Your Income (Even If You’re Exhausted)
You can’t cut your way to wealth forever. At some point, the biggest power move is:
Make more money.
Not in a hustle-till-you-collapse way. In a strategic, compassionate, “I deserve better” way.
Realistic income boosters when you’re starting from nothing
- Use the skills you already have: bookkeeping, admin, cleaning, childcare, typing, organising, tutoring, social media.
- Look for slightly better-paying jobs or hours: not a massive life overhaul – just tiny upgrades.
- Earn in small experiments: selling a service, trying a digital product, offering one-off sessions.
- Drop energy drains: if something costs you more in stress than it pays in cash, rethink it.
Most people underestimate how powerful an extra £50–£200 a month can be when you’re intentional with it: emergency fund, debt, then investments.
In How to Build Wealth on a Low Income, I walk you through exactly how to:
- Rewrite your money story after chaos
- Use low-income money tips without feeling punished
- Turn small amounts into serious progress

Investing When You Feel “Too Broke to Invest”
Here’s the wild, annoying truth:
Wealth is built by people who start investing before they feel ready.
You don’t need thousands. You don’t need to be an expert. You just need to start where you are.
Why investing matters – even for low incomes
If you only ever rely on your wage, your future is chained to your energy and your boss’s mood. When you invest, you start building money that works when you’re asleep, tired, or watching Netflix in bed.
Even small, regular amounts in low-cost diversified funds over time can grow dramatically thanks to compounding – which is basically “interest on your interest” and one of the core ways ordinary people build wealth from scratch. [oai_citation:2‡www.slideshare.net](https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/how-to-build-wealth-from-nothingpdf/260966639?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
Start tiny. Start wonky. Start scared. But start.
Step six
Single Parent? The Game Is Different – But So Are You
If you’re a single parent, let’s be clear: you are not just playing life on “hard mode”. You’re playing it on “final level boss mode” with half the resources and double the responsibilities.
So your wealth-building strategy has to honour that reality.
Rules for single parent wealth-building
- Rest is non-negotiable: burnout makes bad money decisions. Sleep is a financial strategy.
- Simple systems only: automations, boring standing orders, no overcomplicated budgets.
- Kid-proof goals: plan for school stuff, clothes, exams, chaos. Build those costs into your plan instead of acting surprised every time.
- Protect your peace: no more letting toxic people use you as an overdraft, emotional or financial.
You are not “behind”. You’re carrying a whole extra human being (or several) and still showing up. That’s legendary energy.
Step seven
Healing Money Trauma: You’re Not Lazy – You’re Wounded
If you’ve survived narcissistic parents, abusive partners, financial control, or years of scarcity, of course money feels heavy.
It’s not just numbers for you. It’s memories. It’s shame. It’s “I don’t want to go back there ever again.”
So when you catch yourself:
- Procrastinating on opening letters
- Ignoring your bank app
- Spending to numb feelings
Try this thought:
“Nothing is wrong with me. Something happened to me. And now I’m learning a new way.”
You are allowed to build wealth gently. You are allowed to take breaks. You are allowed to cry over spreadsheets. You are allowed to start again at 30, 40, 50, 60. There is no age limit on “I deserve better”.
Global reality check
This Isn’t Just a UK Thing – People Everywhere Are Done Being Broke
Whether you’re in the UK, US, Europe, India, Africa, Australia or literally anywhere with bills and Wi-Fi, people all over the world are searching for ways to build wealth from nothing and find realistic low income money tips. [oai_citation:3‡FinanceBuzz](https://financebuzz.com/build-wealth-from-scratch?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
So if you’ve ever felt alone because you’re struggling, please hear this:
- It’s not just you.
- You’re not cursed.
- You’re not destined to stay where you are.
You’re part of a whole wave of people quietly saying, “I don’t want to be poor. I want something different for me and my kids.”
Bringing it all together
So… How Do You Actually Build Wealth From Nothing?
Let’s recap in human language:
- Stop apologising for wanting money. You’re allowed to want stability, freedom and choices.
- Seal the leaks. Cut what genuinely doesn’t serve you; keep what keeps you sane.
- Build a tiny-but-mighty emergency fund. £5 at a time is still progress.
- Make a plan for your debt. No more shame. Just a strategy.
- Increase your income in small, smart ways. You don’t need a six-figure job to make a big difference.
- Start investing earlier than feels comfortable. Let compounding do the heavy lifting over time.
- Look after your nervous system. Rest, boundaries, and healing are part of the financial plan.
None of this depends on being perfect. It only depends on you being persistent.
If this hit home and you’re ready for a proper roadmap, my book is literally written for you:
How to Build Wealth on a Low Income – a clear, sweary, supportive guide to going from “I’m so tired of this” to “I’ve actually got a plan now.”
