How to Stop Your Phone’s Key Signal Being Interrupted by Burglars Stealing Your Car

Modern cars like Mercedes use keyless entry systems that communicate with your key fob or even your phone to unlock and start the car. Unfortunately, savvy thieves can use signal boosting or relay attacks to intercept these signals and steal your car — even if the key (or phone) is inside your house!

Here’s how to protect yourself:

  1. Use a Faraday pouch or box:
Keep your key fob or phone inside a Faraday pouch or metal container when you’re not using it. These block the signal and stop thieves from picking it up remotely.
  2. Turn off your phone’s NFC or car key app when not in use:
Some phones act as car keys via NFC or Bluetooth. Disable these features or turn off Bluetooth when you’re not using them to reduce signal risk.
  3. Keep your keys/phone away from doors and windows:
Don’t leave your keys or phone near entry points where thieves can amplify the signal from outside your home.
  4. Use additional physical security:
Steering wheel locks or immobilizers add another layer beyond electronic protection.
  5. Regularly update your car and phone software:
Manufacturers often release patches that improve security against relay attacks.
