Why Am I Always Tired? (Especially as a Single Parent) – Funny, Honest, Burnout Truths
Why Am I Always Tired? (Especially as a Single Parent)
Let’s get this out of the way immediately:
If you are a single parent and you’re always tired, congratulations — you’re normal.
You’re not lazy. You’re not unmotivated. You’re not “bad with mornings.” You’re running an entire household, career, emotional support centre, therapy hotline, taxi service, crisis-management unit, and catering company… on your own.
This post is for the single parents who wake up tired, go to bed tired, and somehow manage to be tired even during the three minutes they sit down in silence before somebody yells:
“MUMMMMMMMMMMMM!”
Let’s talk honestly — and hilariously — about why you’re exhausted, and why none of it is your fault.
1. Because You're Doing the Work of Three People
You’re playing ALL the roles: mum, dad, adult human, emotional shock absorber, money manager, bill payer, peacemaker, chef, cleaner, and personal assistant to a teenager with unpredictable moods.
In a two-parent household, this workload is naturally shared. In a single-parent household? You do EVERYTHING. Every. Bloody. Thing.
No wonder your soul feels like it needs a nap.
2. The Mental Load Is Destroying You
People think exhaustion comes from physical tasks. No. It’s the thinking.
Your brain is like 500 tabs open at once:
- School stuff
- Work deadlines
- Money stress
- Shopping lists
- Appointments
- “What will she want for dinner?”
- “Do I have clean clothes?” (No.)
- “Am I doing enough?”
Your brain never clocks off — even when you’re lying down. That’s not tiredness. That’s mental load fatigue.
3. You’re Recovering From Trauma AND Parenting
This part doesn’t get talked about enough.
Being a single parent is one thing. Being a single parent after narcissistic abuse, chaos, poverty, or emotional neglect? Completely different level.
You’re not just parenting. You’re healing WHILE parenting.
And healing is exhausting. Trauma freezes your body in survival mode. Even when life calms down, your brain is still scanning for danger like:
“Is it safe? Are we safe? Are we sure?”
No wonder you feel tired.
4. You Never, Ever Get Real Rest
When you rest, do you actually rest?
- Scrolling isn’t rest.
- Cleaning isn’t rest.
- Clearing your kid’s mugs from their bedroom isn’t rest.
- Watching TV while doing seven other things isn’t rest.
Real rest is: sitting or lying down, doing nothing, no guilt, no expectations, brain on airplane mode.
When was the last time you had that?
Exactly.
5. You Get Interrupted Every 2.3 Minutes
You cannot complete a single task without someone yelling for your attention:
- “MUM, I’m hungry!” (Again.)
- “MUM, where’s my charger?”
- “MUM, what’s for dinner?”
- “MUM, the WiFi hates me!”
You’re not tired — you’re constantly rebooting like a malfunctioning laptop.
6. You Never Have a Backup Plan
One parent sick? Still your job.
One parent overwhelmed? Still your job.
One parent having a meltdown? Still your job!
You don’t get to say “I need a minute.” You get to say “I’ll have a minute when she moves out.”
7. Your Hormones, Adrenals, and Nervous System Are Fried
Chronic stress does this fun thing where it:
- Destroys your energy levels
- Wrecks your sleep
- Raises cortisol
- Creates inflammation
- Makes you feel exhausted all the time
You’re not imagining it. Your body is waving a tiny white flag like:
“Please stop. Please sit. Please don’t make me do more laundry.”
8. You Feel Responsible for EVERYTHING
Single parents carry a level of responsibility that is basically superhuman:
- Financial pressure
- Emotional pressure
- Practical pressure
- Keeping your kid alive pressure
This alone is enough to drain your battery faster than a phone on 2% with 46 apps running.
9. You Give Love But Rarely Receive It Back
You pour out:
- Time
- Energy
- Money
- Support
- Patience
But who pours into YOU?
Exactly. It’s emotional malnutrition — and yes, it causes exhaustion.
So… What Can You Actually Do About It?
Here’s the part that matters:
You don’t fix exhaustion by “trying harder”. You fix it by doing LESS.
1. Rest before the crash
If your body whispers “sit down,” don’t wait for it to scream.
2. Lower the bar
You don't need a Pinterest house. You need peace.
3. Schedule NOTHING time
Not cleaning. Not organising. Not self-improving. Nothing.
4. Stop doing things no one appreciates
Your energy is precious. Treat it like currency.
5. Laugh more — it resets your nervous system
Humour is medicine. And you deserve joy that’s not attached to productivity.
The truth: You’re tired because you’re doing TOO MUCH with too little support.
You’re not failing. You’re over-functioning.
You’re Not Lazy — You’re Carrying a Life on Your Back
If nobody told you:
- You’re strong.
- You’re doing an impossible job.
- You’re allowed to be tired.
- You’re allowed to rest.
- You deserve help, support and comfort.
You’re not tired because you’re weak. You’re tired because you’re a single parent warrior living in a world that expects you to carry everything alone.
Please rest. Please be kind to yourself. And please remember:
You were never meant to do all of this by yourself… yet here you are, still standing, still trying, still loving.
That’s why you’re tired. And that’s why you’re incredible.
