What I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Building Anything That Matters
Building something meaningful—whether a business, a career, or a body of work—is less about hacks and more about fundamentals that compound over time. These are lessons shared by Sam Altman, distilled from years of operating at the highest levels of entrepreneurship and leadership.
They are not guarantees of success. They are principles that dramatically improve the odds.
1. Momentum starts with belief and energy
Optimism, obsession, self-belief, raw effort, and personal connections are what get things started. Without these, nothing meaningful ever leaves the ground.
2. Finishing requires discipline and long-term thinking
Cohesive teams, a balance of calmness and urgency, and unreasonable commitment are how things get finished. Long-term orientation is rare—stop worrying about short-term opinions. It gets easier with time.
3. Hard things that matter beat easy things that don’t
Teams find it easier to rally around a difficult mission that matters than a simple task with no real impact. Audacious ideas motivate people.
4. Incentives are superpowers
People respond to incentives more than intentions. Design them carefully—or they will quietly work against you.
5. Focus is subtraction
Concentrate resources on a small number of high-conviction bets. This is simple to say and very hard to do. You can delete far more than you think.
6. Clear communication is leverage
Communicate clearly and concisely. Confusion compounds faster than clarity.
7. Fight bureaucracy aggressively
Whenever you see unnecessary process or bullshit, eliminate it—and encourage others to do the same. Org charts should never block productive collaboration.
8. Outcomes matter more than process
Good process does not excuse bad results. Measure what actually happens, not how elegant the plan looked.
9. Recruiting is never “done”
Spend more time hiring. Take risks on high-potential people who improve quickly. Look for evidence of execution, not just intelligence.
10. Superstars matter more than you think
Exceptional performers create disproportionate impact. Evaluate people based on their net contribution to the organization, not surface-level effort.
11. Speed beats perfection
Fast iteration can compensate for being wrong. It is usually fine to make mistakes if you correct them quickly. Strategy should be measured in decades; execution in weeks.
12. Respect reality
Do not fight the business equivalent of the laws of physics. Some constraints cannot be negotiated—only worked with.
13. Inaction is a hidden risk
Inspiration fades. Life moves quickly. Doing nothing is often more dangerous than making an imperfect decision.
14. Scale changes everything
Growth creates surprising and powerful emergent properties. What works at small scale often behaves very differently at large scale.
15. Compounding is magic
Exponential growth is real. The most valuable businesses are built to gain compounding advantages as they scale.
16. Get up and keep going
Resilience is non-negotiable. Almost everyone gets knocked down. The difference is who stands back up.
17. People are the point
Working with great people is one of the best parts of life. Choose environments and collaborators accordingly.
